CaixaEscena Pedagogical Kit


CaixaEscena and La Mandarina de Newton have been working together with the aim of creating a pedagogical kit that could be used as a new and innovative tool when sharing and educating dramatic arts topics in the classroom. In order to do so, we found it essential to have the collaboration of theater professionals and teachers from other disciplines during the different phases of the process. For that we have organised three co-creating sessions with professionals from different areas of Spain.

These sessions started in Murcia (January 24) and this first workshop was a meeting for brainstorming and ideation. There was an interesting discussion on how theatre can be helpful for academic performance, the generation of debates and the personal growth (improving the self-esteem and the perception of others). Nearly a dozen participants assisted the workshop and it was really inspiring.

The second session took place in Madrid, on February 20, and it focused on the prototyping process. Ten participants nailed down the ideas generated in Murcia, added the online proposals, and all ended up combined in two different kit prototypes.

After these two workshops La Mandarina de Newton worked on the two designs proposed by the participants and was able to integrate both of them into a single prototype kit.

Finally, the last workshop was held in Barcelona, on March 20, and the attendees tested this prototype and gave feedback and new ideas in order to improve and extend it.

Now, with all this material, and with the help of theater experts and specialised designers, we will keep working on the prototype in order to achieve the final design of the CaixaEscena Pedagogical Kit.

CaixaEscena Pedagogical Kit - co-creation of educational content



La Mandarina de Newton starts a new collaboration with Obra Social “La Caixa” within one of its educational projects, ‘CaixaEscena’.

CaixaEscena is a program that aims to support to the teachers who promote theater at their schools, by encouraging the exchange of knowledge between them and theater professionals. Through different activities for both teachers and students, CaixaEscena is a participatory project that proposes theater as a tool for cultural, social and educational development of young people.

This year La Mandarina de Newton will be the entity responsible for the organization of a new series of workshops within this educational program. The goal is to share the knowledge generated during the previous activities and give it a new form  that will allow to expand and share, in a useful and intuitive way, that knowledge – a pedagogical kit. Over several co-creation sessions with teachers and theater professionals, we will be creating the basis of the didactic contents of that kit and which will afterwards be produced by CaixaEscena, along with specialized designers. This kit will then be available to both workshop participants, as to any other teacher that want to use it.

We will be leading three co-creation workshops throughout the first quarter of 2015, in three spanish autonomic regions:

January 24, 2015, Murcia.
Workshop 1: Ideation and prototyping. Together we will create the basis of the didactic contents of the kit.

February 20, 2015, Madrid.
Workshop 2: Content sprint. To identify and produce the main contents of the kit.

March 20, 2015, Barcelona.
Workshop 3: Testing and final validation. Improvement suggestions and final presentation event.

All participants will be acknowledged and cited in the final design.

II Jornadas de Divulgación Innovadora D+I (II Meeting on Innovative Outreach R&D)


On the 17-18th of October, at Utopia Center for Art an d Technology in Zaragoza, took place the second edition of the Meeting on Innovative Outreach (II Jornadas de Divulgación Innovadora D+I). More than forty communicators from all over Spain met during these two days to present and share different approaches and strategies for communicate science. An intense meeting in which, under the motto ‘Science excites. Telling it, also’, professionals were able to discover innovative approaches, strategies and formats to talk about science. Humor, theatre, dance, magic, music, videogames, workshops… were some of the outreach ‘tools’ presented.

In addition to the professional sessions, citizens also had the opportunity to participate in this meeting. During the afternoons there were several free activities opened to the general public: collective creations with Lego, magic shows, concerts, collective intelligence experiments and scientific monologues.

La Mandarina de Newton also participated on this conference with the workshop ‘Creativity in Motion’. This was a two-day session workshop where, by playing with methodologies to promote creativity and with the help of new mobile technologies, participants had the opportunity to explore an audiovisual technique, Stop Motion, which is accesible to everyone and that can be used to communicate content in an easily, attractive and funny way.

In addition, Irene Lapuente from La Mandarina de Newton was one of the moderators of the round table “Mixed, not stirred. Intersections, tangencies, miscegenation”. On this session there were four experts on hybridizing science with other disciplines, such as literature, music, art, graffiti or citizen participation. Two physicists, a musician and a mathematician: Gustavo Ariel Schwartz, Antonio Arias, Josep Perello and David Martin de Diego, presented their experiences and discussed with the others and the audience the chances to mix and the future of science.

This was an event organised by the Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation in collaboration with the City Council, together with the Spanish Association of Science Communication, the CSIC, the University of Zaragoza, the Science Communication Observatory of the Pompeu Fabra University and the Ibercivis Foundation.


Ondarebizia - Participatory Museums Workshop


This year, the Rezola Museum, in collaboration with the Oiasso Museum, presented a new  project: Ondarebizia. This is a project of cultural heritage awareness and a platform that seeks to open new strategies to link heritage and citizenship, and the professionals of the sector.

Within the framework of this project, a line of actions were planned, called ’Open Session’, aimed at professionals in the museum sector, in order to discuss and share different topics of interest.

On the 15th and 16th of May, at the Rezola Museum (Gordailua), it took place the first ‘Open Session’ with the workshop ‘Participatory Museums’ taught by La Mandarina de Newton (within its line of work Co-Creating Cultures).


The workshop was divided in two sessions devoted to question and share concepts and trends around the theme of participation in museums. How do we understand the involvement of the museums? How do we manage it? Public and participatory processes? Why? For what?

Opens Science of the City II Video Contest!

La Mandarina de Newton, within its area of research and work Co-Creating Cultures, and after the success of the first edition, launches the second edition of Science of the City.

Science of the City takes places in Barcelona, Silicon Valley, Paris and other cities. La Mandarina de Newton appreciates the support of the Tech Museum of San Jose in Silicon Valley, California, of the entire membership of its virtual platform. Also the support of the Paris-Montagne NGO and the Municipality of Barcelona.

Science of the City promotes dialogue between city and science

Scientists and technologists do research and create solutions that affect us in our daily lives. How can we let them know what we know and what concerns us about the problems in our streets, squares and neighborhoods? How can we learn and work together to improve our daily life in our cities?

Through the Science of the City project we create a bridge for anyone to reach and meet with scientists and technologists, and to know the why of the thousand and one possibilities and realities that science and technology create for our cities.

If you want to participate in the process, start by entering the video contest and send a two-minute video that can be:

  • a question: make a video about a question that intrigues you and that involves some science or technology aspect.

For example, “How is traffic handled in a city?.” If you win the contest, we will help you spend time with a research group that can answer your question.

  • a proposal: Imagine and describe a solution that incorporates science and technology. We will look for a research group that can evaluate your proposal and you will be able to see how they work on it and how it evolves.

For example, in the first edition of Science of the City a participant suggested using the street noises to create power in cities: Can you think of a proposal to solve other problems in the city?

From now until December 7th you will be able to send us as many videos as you want and we will upload them at this platform. Chose an idea, make a 2 minutes video, upload it at your Youtube acount and send us (cocreatingcultures (@) a short description and the link. We will upload them at the platform of the project:

During this time you can also watch the videos of other participants, comment on them, ask other people in the platform for advice on your own videos and, finally, vote on the proposals.

Remember, the deadline ends on December 7th, 2012.

The best videos submitted to the contests will be selected by a jury and by popular vote. All videos will be part of a research project open to scientists and technologists.

This year three prizes will be awarded:

  • Most original question
  • More surprising proposal
  • Most voted Video

If you look carefully around you, you will be surprised with the number of scientific phenomena that can be observed without leaving your city. If, however, you still have doubts about how they could be shown on your clips,you can have a look at the two samples we have prepared. We hope they you like them and they can inspire you!


Science of the City attracts media impacts

Science of the City has left behind a huge virtual print, plenty of videos. We have to take in account not only the 50 videos sent by the participants of the SOTC global competition, but many pieces of art created specifically for the exhibition. Is not surprising, after all, that the exhibit seen last May in Arts Santa Mònica has been documented with a good amount of videos as, for instance the Opening of the exhibition.

Media has made its own interpretation of the project, as we see in the stories of La Malla Tendències and the Pla B of Barcelona Television or the live connection by Connexió Barcelona, ​​also from BTV.

Daily newspaper

Agendas of ARA, La Vanguardia and El Periodico de Catalunya newspapers, included the Science of the City as one of the remarkable cultural offers of the week. El Periódico, meanwhile, also published an extensive news in the section Gran Barcelona. Also El Heraldo de Aragon, from Zaragoza, dedicated an article inside the Tercer Milenio  supplement.

At a broader level, the digital editions of those media have shown a special interest to discover  scientific evidence in everyday life. The Catalan edition of El they collected in their culture section while the blog “Art in the Age of Silicon“, also from this medium showed in the video Skup “The amazing makeup of the atom” to explain the co-creative process started months ago with the video contest. Something similar was seen in,, using the same resource to introduce the project.

Radio comes to expo

Minutes before the opening of the exhibition, a mobile unit of COM Ràdio approached to Arts Santa Monica to explain in all detail the scope of this cultural program to the listeners of the Extraradi program. Two days earlier, in the same station, Irene Lapuente had already explained the project from the main studio of Eureka!. In a similar way, the Altra Ràdio radio program invited Irene Lapuente to speak about this initiative a week earlier. More recently, in June, the unique humor of Pa ciència la nostra offered his particular vision of the Science of the City project.

The impact of the City Science in the media has also been reflected in many blogs as the Observatori 2.0 al Science Centre Singapore, Fundación Quorum, Karma Peiró or Paz Domínguez Moreover, publishing spaces of organizations and persons connected to the project as Albert Folk, The Tech Open Source, Hangar, imarte, Universitat de Barcelona and Arts Santa Mònica. spreaded the news too.


ICT Case 2012 solved! At last, we know the name of the winners

The most intriguing mystery of  ICT Case 2012, has been solved. Finally we know the name of the winners of this micro-stories competition.  In total we have received 88 short stories,  composed with less than 800 words, around Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). An outstanding participation rate indeed, 56 stories witten by Upper Primary Education students and 22 stories created by Secondary School students, coming from 13 different schools.

The call for was jointly managed by the L’Altra Ràdio of Radio 4, the Departament d’Ensenyament, La Mandarina of Newton and the science teacher and writer of literature of intrigue, Jordi de Manuel.

All winning entries and finalists will be posted on the website of L’Altra Ràdio and the Co-Creating Cultures Blog of La Mandarina Newton. The three winning entries will be re-adapted in radio version and will be broadcasted by L’Altra Ràdio in June 2012. This edition will also include the radio version of the  Guatzsap short story, written for the ICT Case of 2012 by Jordi de Manuel.


…And as an invitation to co-create on the Internet
La Mandarina de Newton will make several open proposals for co-creating nano-stories through social networks to all Internet users. A new story will be co-created each week during the month of June, starting with the first sentence of the three winning stories and the story Guatzsap. This initiative, called “To Be Continued …” will propose the participants to continue the story by adding new sentences starting from the first one. The co-creative process will take place in parallel

This co-creation will take place in parallel on the Co-Creating Cultures Blog, Co-Creating Cultures Facebook and Twitter @cocreatingcult. New nano-sories (even shorter stories) will be created inspired by the begginings by the beginnings of the winning stories and built from the participation of several people. Modelling the evolution of the same history across different platforms will provide us a wide variety of rich and interesting stories.


Discovering the Science of the City project with la Malla Tendències

The Science of the City project attracted the interest of La Malla Tendències TV who produced the wonderful video that you see here.  It is a good way to learn more details about the research and experimentation process behind the nine pieces of art that have been exposed at Arts Santa Mònica for nearly two weeks.

With a flexible and imaginative style, this report shows between different videos created by people all over the world and builds a story from them. It adds the collective views and experiences of all participants in the process: citizens who submitted videos, artists and curators. Irene Lapuente, explains the genesis of the whole project. Inés Navarro, tells us why her team of citizen participants decided to choose a lunar eclipse as the subject of their video.  She also tells us about and what they got to know from the astronomy buffs that they met on Montjuïc, a the hill that overlooks Barcelona. Borja Leonardo Fermoselle and Aleix Molet, two artists of the IMARTE art research Group, explain how they elaborated their own re-interpretations of scientific facts taking their curiosity as a starting point, as other citizens did.

Looking at the final results, there is no doubt that everyone has some way or other integrated the science in their lives, creating a source of new questions for the future.

TalentLab: Amongst Intelligent Machines–session II

The second session of the “Amongst Intelligent Machines” workshop, from the TalentLab project, took place on March 21st. On arrival, we resumed the groups of the previous session and we started working. First we warmed up engines with an activity that sought to recover and share ideas from the first session. Thus, each group summarized the main lines that define the resources proposed in the brainwritting or fast rain of resources.

After being placed, we got straight to the matter and the groups were proposed to specify a single resource proposal. The proposals were constructed by combining knowledge (imagination, experience, talent, etc.) and available materials (clay, ribbons, sticks, balls, etc.).

The first group came up with a platform (or box) from wich emerged challenges to be solved by users based on his knowledge of constraints. The challenges could be to design an urban ecosystem management (dams, nuclear plants, etc..) and the users would be different educational centers proposing solutions based on collaborative work. The second group proposed a game that could be physical (boardgame) or virtual designed to exercise how to make decisions and work with values (money, culture, welfare, autonomy, etc.) in connection with the introduction of technology in society. The aim of this dynamic would be to show the influence of values when citizens of a given society make their own decisions. The third group conceived of a resource that would combine computers and robotics in order to work collaboratively. The idea is that two computers or users should design a common task to be performed by two robots like, for instance, two units transporting an object together. To accomplish the goal both robots should establish communication successfully, using Scratch programming to design and simulate the robotics tasks.

When the proposals were enough defined, we proceed with a series of iterations in order to improve them. The groups were divided so that one half stayed to defend the proposal in front of “potential users” posing doubts and exposing limitations. The other half went to see the proposal of another group putting on the skin of the “person” defined in the first session. After iterating a couple of times, each group shared the contributions made by other participants, identified certain deficiencies and incorporated new elements from the suggestions received. Thus, the first group saw the need to limit the approach of the platform to a single challenge with goals that should be defined. The second group incorporated the idea that the issues raised should be based on specific situations (such as a daughter that leaves her mother one afternoon with a robot companion). It was stated that the differences in values would emerge more clearly from this kind of situations. Also, he suggested the possibility that the users ponder by themselves the values associated with certain activities. Moreover, was made known the existence of similar resources as the Deliberatorium MIT or a card game. The third group saw the need to establish some kind of sensor-based communication between robots.

Later, participants were required to assess in more detail the main aspects of the resource to design (philosophy, theme, methodology, requirements, problems, budget) and these considerations were exposed to the other groups. Once done, there was a vote (I can’t remember the name of the voting system used). The most voted proposal was ArgumentaTIC, created by the second group, although all were well balanced and fairly valued. The possibility to incorporate aspects of the first and third proposals to the chosen proposal was also discussed.From now on we have to work on this proposal and see if it is possible to perform with the available resources, and other to come from other sources (sponsors) or if is more convinient to produce it at a later stage.

In the final reflection, some participants expressed their interest in seeing the work done in the workshop translated into an educational resource. A point shared by the organizing team, who reiterated the idea of producing educational resources arising from a process of co-creation, as one of the goals of this project. But at the same time, the team stressed the importance of the working process by itself, ie, the fact of involving teachers and researchers, the working dynamics, contacts established (worknetting) etc.

With this workshop we end the series of workshops planned for this year. Hopefully we will see soon the educational resources produced. We also hope that next year we can make the second edition, coming with with new topics (archeology, marine sciences, astronomy, etc.) and work together with more research centers that are asking for more activities. New workshops and new resources.
